It is finally here! The start of our 2021 CSA journey and are we ever excited to kick off a great year. Each week visit this page to see what you can expect in the upcoming week’s share. That way you can plan your meals and adjust your grocery shop accordingly. I should have the new update by Monday evening, so make it a new habit to log in. Although we always have the next 4-6 weeks basket items planned, mother nature will always dictate what is ready and what may need another week. We also carry lots of items in our “on-line” store. If you want to supplement your share, place your order by Tuesday and we will have it ready when you pick up your basket. Just go to Products – Rumar Farm and you will see weekly produce, plants/seedlings and pantry items. Right now in the pantry we have our famous Funky Funghi Mushroom Farm Kit which would make a great fathers day gift. Check it out.
Here is what you can expect this week:
Green head lettuce Unlike your grocery store lettuce, taste the earthy flavour of our certified organic/biodynamic greens. Large leaves can be used for sandwich wraps.
Red head lettuce The colour is striking, mix it with your green lettuce to make a lovely inviting salad.
Rhubarb Fresh tasty bunch. Here are a few of our favourite ways to enjoy rhubarb. The classic crumble with ice cream is a fast, easy dessert, but why not try something new. Pickle it and add to your salad, slaws or with your sandwiches. Stew it with sugar and pour over ice cream, pancakes or waffles. Puree baked rhubarb and use it to make homemade soda or try a boozy rhubarb margarita. The ways to enjoy rhubarb is endless.
Asparagus Fresh hand picked, there are so many ways to prepare. Boiling, steaming, roasting, sautéing, broiling and pan roasting are various ways to make the tender green spears pop with flavour. We love to grill it right on the BBQ for a 15 minute smoky and sweetly caramelized side dish. Just toss with olive oil, kosher salt and pepper and place it directly on a hot grill for 6-10 minutes perpendicular to the bars so they don’t fall through! Squeeze a bit of lemon juice and top with grated parmesan cheese.
Fresh Mushrooms This year we have partnered with Funky Funghi, a local mushroom grower to add something a bit special to your first basket. You will find 8 ounces of organically grown oyster mushrooms. Very mild, woody taste with a meaty texture. Simply pan fry for an easy delicious way to prepare them. Oyster mushrooms make a great pulled pork substitute for any vegetarians out there. Just store them in their box in your fridge and they should stay fresh for about a week. They can also be dried to use later.
Mixed Asian Greens Can be wilted in soup, added to scrambled eggs or omelets for brunch. We like to just chop them all up and sauté in olive oil, ginger and garlic. Add cooked brown rice and stir fry together. Serve in a bowl and sprinkle with green onions.
Culinary Herb Bouquet Chives and Sage with edible blossoms.
Enjoy.
