Last year Nadia Esposito who runs a local yoga studio and because of covid approached us to hold some classes at Rumar Farm. Back by popular demand, we will be offering a number of classes again this year. If you were lucky enough to secure a spot for the session this week, your evening will begin with a short walk through our wooded path (we call it our enchanted forest) where Marc will talk about bio dynamics and how it connects to the practice of yoga. At the back of the peach orchard by the old forest trees, Nadia will run through the yoga poses until dusk. At the conclusion the participants will be given a treat basket of organic goodies. If that sounds like something you would be interested in, Nadia will be running more session throughout the season. Watch for upcoming postings or connect directly with Nadia at nadiaesposito@hotmail.com .
Here is what you can expect this week:
Hearty Salad Mix A blend of tender lettuce mixed with mustard greens. The stronger, sharp taste of the mustards with the sweet taste of the lettuce is a wonderful combination. Works great with cider-Dijon dressing.
Garlic Scapes Because there are so many ways to enjoy garlic scapes, we added them in your basket again this week. One of our past members shared her pickling recipe. We have done a few batches in the past and really love having them on our epic charcuterie board during the holiday season. If you are feeling ambitious and want to order extra, visit our online store. We will add them to your CSA basket.
Strawberries It’s that time of year that everyone looks forward to juicy, sun ripened strawberries. To keep them fresh, sort and store them unwashed with their stems on in a shallow loosely covered container in your fridge. Remove the stems after washing them to avoid diluting the flavour.
White turnips with greens The bulb you can grill, cook or eat them raw. Grate them into a salad or slice them up with dip. The greens can be used in a salad, sandwich or as a wrap. Also add them to soups or casseroles. I like to sauté them and combine with black-eyed peas and brown rice for a healthy version of a southern favourite. Turnips are a rich source of minerals and vitamins.
Spinach A dark leafy green packed with vitamins and other nutrients. Considered a “superfood” spinach has a range of health benefits and is important for skin, hair and bone health. Best way to enjoy the benefits of spinach is to eat it raw in a salad or add it to your smoothie. (pairs well with strawberries – see above).
Bunch Lavender Add a pleasant scent to your home with this small fragrant bouquet. Some other interesting ways to use lavender is in desserts and drinks. Perhaps make a small batch of infused oil or lavender bath salts.
Wild Flower Honey Sample of our unpasteurized honey from organic wild flowers, clover and fruit blossoms. Our bees are looked after by Anthony at Happy Bees Apiary. You can find our 500g jars in the pantry on our online store.
