To be certified biodynamic, we are required to develop our own source of soil nutrition from elements found on your farm. To build our compost pile we use chipped wood from old fruit trees, garden waste, leaves from our bush and the most important ingredient is our chicken manure. Once a year we turn over the pile and inoculate it with our special BD preparations. We were required by Demeter to have live animals on the farm (their preference would be cows) and given our size and location, hens were the likely solution. Our chickens are very hard working birds. Along with their contribution to our natural fertilizer, they are strategically located in various places on the farm to keep the pests in check. They love to eat bugs and especially grubs that damage our crops. So if you are driving by the farm you can likely see them at the top of the hill in the peach or plum orchard.
Another bonus our hens give us is fresh eggs every day. It is always a topic of conversation at our supper table around how many they laid today. We have been saving up to give you a real treat this week. If you haven’t ever tasted farm fresh eggs before, there is no comparison to the grocery store factory eggs. After this week you should be able to find them posted on our store, but they usually sell out pretty fast.
Here is what you can expect in your basket:
Farm Fresh Eggs A sample of the best eggs you will ever eat!
Large head green lettuce I warned you there will be lots of greens. Large leaves can be used for sandwich wraps.
Large head red lettuce The colour is striking, mix it with you green lettuce for a beautiful salad.
Tat Tsoi A buttery Asian green that is super sweet and easy to love. Treat it like spinach, its very versatile. You can toss the small leaves into your salad, add it to stir fry or smoothie. It is chock-full of vitamins.
Mixed Bunch Radish Mildly spicy flavour when eaten raw. A new way to enjoy them is roasted or sauté with butter and garlic. Also great pickled. And those radish tops, pest0 them.
Fresh Garlic Cloves Has a more powerful taste than cured garlic, full of moisture so it will cook faster too. You will be getting more garlic later in the season so just use it up.
Sweet Cherries Bursting with sweetness, these natural treats have zero added sugar (for those of us with a sweet tooth) Will last about a week in the fridge but best just washed and eaten right away. These powerful antioxidants have anti-inflammatory properties, reduce stress and are a natural source of melatonin that can aid in improving the quality of your sleep.
Wildflower Bouquet Our wildflower strip in the middle of the farm attracts beneficial insects and honey bees. They help us pollinate the fruit while offering a colorful floral show. We want you to have a small sample of its beauty for your home.
Honey Sample Sorry we missed it last week.
Enjoy.
