Fruit supplies us with an abundance of vitamins and minerals that are important for a variety of functions in the body. Its an excellent source of fiber that helps manage chronic diseases, supports your digestive system not to mention fruit is a delicious staple. Your body actually needs some sugar to fuel energy. Heath Canada recommends we get about 45-65 percent of our daily calories from carbohydrate foods such as grains, starches, vegetables and you guessed it – fruit. Sovereign Coronation Seedless Grapes – We partnered again to bring you certified organic blue-purple seedless grapes from our good friend and fellow organic farmer, Clayton Farm in St. David’s. Coronation is a midseason variety with sweet – and – tart taste that burst in the mouth. Great for eating, making jams, jellies, pies and sauces.
Head Lettuce – You can use head lettuce for more than just salads; try making lettuce wraps and sandwiches, stir-frying it with other vegetables, grilling it for a smoky flavour, adding it to soups and broths, blending it into healthy smoothies or green juices or even using it as a low-carb substitute for bread in a burger bowl or as a topping for tocos.
Sun Ripe Tomatoes – The season is just starting so get ready for a few weeks of this delicious fruit (they are considered vegetables by nutritionists). Start thinking about all the wonderful things you can do with them. Salsa, ketchup, Caesars, soup, bruschetta and gazpacho are just a few ideas.
Honey Dew Melon – A crisp yet juicy green flesh. These vine ripened melons are picked at their peak with a wonderful sweet flavour. A good source of vitamin C, B6, potassium and fiber. Make a quick smoothie with cubed honeydew, yogurt, apple juice and ice. Great in a fruit salad or get really creative with a honeydew and cucumber salad. Or just enjoy it on its own.
Yellow Cooking Onions – Sweet and mellow when eaten raw, rich taste when cooked. A culinary staple.
White Potatoes – A popular and versatile vegetable known for their white flesh, thin skin and creamy texture. holding their shape well in various dishes. They are rich in carbohydrates, vitamin C, and potassium, and can be cooked in numerous ways, including mashing, baking, frying, and roasting. Common uses include potato salad, soups, stews, and as a side dish.
Garlic Chives with Blossoms – These are edible flowers that can be used as a garnish or added to salads. They also look pretty in a small vase. The chives are versatile and can be used fresh as a garnish or cooked as a vegetable in dishes like stir-fries, eggs , dumplings and soups. They impart a mild, garlicky-onion flavor and pair well with proteins, vegetables, and eggs. To use them, simply wash the flat, grass-like leaves, chop them, and add them near the end of cooking to preserve their fresh flavor.
