We are excited to be offering you generous amounts of seasonal fruit in your 2024 CSA basket. What a healthy snack to give to your family. Fruit supplies us with an abundance of vitamins and minerals that are important for a variety of functions in the body. Its an excellent source of fiber that helps manage chronic diseases, supports your digestive system not to mention fruit is a delicious staple. Your body actually needs some sugar to fuel energy. Heath Canada recommends we get about 45-65 percent of our daily calories from carbohydrate foods such as grains, starches, vegetables and you guessed it – fruit. So, get your healthy dose of sugar from Rumar Farm’s certified organic and biodynamic orchard. If you want to supplement your share this week with more fruit, visit our online store. We will have your purchase ready for you on Wednesday. Thank you to everyone for returning all our baskets, quarts and pints each week. Remember we recycle as much as we can!
Here is what is in your basket this week:
Sovereign Coronation Seedless Grapes – We partnered again this year to bring you certified organic blue-purple seedless grapes from our good friend and fellow organic farmer, Clayton Farm in St. David’s. Coronation is a midseason variety with sweet – and – tart taste that burst in the mouth. Great for eating, making jams, jellies, pies and sauces.
New Potato Mix – If your family is like ours, we go through a lot of potatoes in a week. Keep the extras in the fridge, these are new potatoes that have a thin delicate skin and have not been cured. A nice mix of white and red skin variety.
Sun Ripe Tomatoes – The season is just starting so get ready for a few weeks of this delicious fruit (they are considered vegetables by nutritionists). Start thinking about all the wonderful things you can do with them. Salsa, ketchup, Caesars, soup, bruschetta and gazpacho are just a few ideas.
Kale – We love to use kale for a hearty salad and one of our favourite is this easy Kale and Pear recipe. Chop up the kale bunch, toss with 1 tbsp olive oil and white wine vinegar, 1/4 tsp salt in a bowl then rub with your fingers until softened. Cook 1/2 cup pecans in a skillet with 1 tbsp olive oil and 1/4 tsp each sugar and salt until toasted. Stir in 2 chopped red pears. Add mixture to kale, drizzle with more oil and vinegar then season with salt and pepper. Toss, sprinkle top with a few garlic blossoms (take a picture) and serve.
Red Clapp Favourite Pears – A very handsome, red fruit that looks great in a fruit salad. Use it in the above recipe and wow your guest!
Garlic Bundle – We sell them at the market like this and they fly off the table. This garlic is cured so you can keep them all winter if you don’t use a lot in your cooking. Studies prove that garlic has many real health benefits such as protection against the common cold and the ability to help lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels. “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food”
Garlic Chive Blossoms – These are edible flowers that can be used as a garnish or added to salads. They also look pretty in a small vase.
