Wow, its hard to believe we are past the half way mark of our 2023 season. But don’t worry, there is much more exciting fruits and vegetables still coming your way. We have just finished our last fall planting of lettuce mix, Asian greens, peas and other shorter season veggies. Also, our wonderful later peaches pears and plums are getting ready for harvest. Don’t forget to go online to our store if there are other items you are interested in. We will have them ready when you come for your basket.
As we are now in the thick of summer vacations and some of you may not be able to pick up your baskets if you are away. Not to worry, you can either let us know of a substitute that will be here for your basket or we will be happy to donate your share to Pelham Cares. Either way its a win/win, but please give us a heads up.
Here is what you can except this week:
Clapp Pears – An heirloom variety and one of the five major pears grown in Ontario, it has white flesh and is exceptionally sweet. Suitable for eating raw, cooking and poaching.
Peaches – Sun ripened, hand picked Garnet Beauty. Experience what a biodynamic peach tastes like. Be aware that unlike conventional farms that apply a finishing spray so they hold longer, ours will need to be eaten or used right away.
Hearty Salad Mix – A mix of sweet tender lettuce with red and green mustard, kale, red and green mizuna, tatsoi and tsoi-sum. Makes for a nice salad.
Flat Green Beans – These beans are meatier than the regular green beans. Low in calories and high in fibre makes them perfect for a healthy and balanced diet. Boil cleaned and cut beans in salted water for 8 minutes. Drain and let cool. Sauté onions and garlic with dried chili pepper in olive oil, add beans and cook for 5 minutes. Finish with lemon juice, salt and pepper.
Potato Mix – Freshly dug organic potatoes. They have been harvested early and have a sweet flavour. Easy to prepare, just boil and drizzle with an herbed olive oil or butter, salt and pepper. Keep refrigerated, they have not been cured for storage.
Cucumber – Every fridge needs a cucumber on hand for adding crunch to a summer sandwich or chop up in your salad. Here you go.
Herb – Chives – Delicate and tender with a mild taste. Perfect to add to soups, dips, mashed or baked potatoes, fish, seafood dishes and omelets. Add chopped chives to a dish at the last minute because heat destroys their delicate flavour.
Enjoy.
