Hard to believe there are only two more CSA pickup weeks left. We always feel a bit bitter sweet this time of year, on one hand its nice to close off another great season and on the other…..we are going to miss you all very much. The great news is our on-line store continues to be loaded with so many yummy things to eat so we hope you continue to come by and enjoy the later fall produce. We will also be attending the Welland farmers market each Saturday morning until we run out of inventory. Marc will be sending out an email to everyone shortly with year end instructions so watch for it in about a week.
Here is what you can expect this week:
Ripe Field Tomatoes If you have not yet made a fresh tomato soup now is your chance. This easy soup can be made in under one hour and is a perfect weekend meal. After bringing to a boil, simmer tomatoes, onions, cloves and chicken broth for 20 minutes. Run mixture through a food mill then slowly add it to a roux in a stock pot using a whisk. Add a bit of sugar and salt, adjust to taste. Serve with a baguette and cheese.
Honey Nut Squash Looks like a mini butternut but on the inside you’ll find an even sweeter, deeper orange flesh. Roast it with butter, cinnamon, salt and pepper. You can add a bit of pure maple syrup, the kids will love it.
Eggplant Are you an eggplant skeptic? The best way to learn to love them is to make eggplant parmesan. Use your tomatoes for a homemade marinara sauce and the basil you also will have on hand! Go for it.
Komatsuna Sometimes referred to as Japanese spinach, can be used in a salad or added to a stir fry. You may also use as wrap, these leaves are easy to work with and holds up. With a mild and sweet taste, frequently referred to as one of the most underrated leafy green.
Sweet Yellow Pepper A bright sweet and slightly tangy flavour, they are lovely to cut up in sandwiches or add to a salad. They also are suitable for stuffing or pickling. If you want to make a larger batch, check out the on-line store. We can add it to your basket pickup.
Baby Bok Choy Crisp, fresh and bursting with loads of unexpected flavour, garlic bok choy may be your new favourite side dish. Halve each stalk and sauté in oil, with garlic and shallots. Add soy sauce and sesame oil then sprinkle with crushed red pepper flakes.
Bunch Basil Most popular and widely used culinary herb. Pairs well with tomatoes, so enjoy adding them to your creations as much as possible.
