Netflix is coming to Rumar Farm….well almost. Marc got asked to meet with a new farmer who is starting an organic peach orchard in Dunnville. He heard about our farm and paid us a visit a while ago to talk about how we grow our fruit organically using biodynamic farming practices. He was able to sell his journey to Netflix and they are producing a documentary similar to “The biggest little Farm”. As it turned out they shot some of it here at our farm! We will let you know when it is playing and hopefully you will see Marc giving pointers to this new farmer.
Here is what you can expect this week:
Freestone Peaches This variety comes off the stone when ripe. They are juicy sweet with a beautiful colour and fragrance. Perfect for eating, canning and freezing. Just slice them down the middle and pull it right off the pit. We pick them at their peak still firm and you can leave them out until they soften if you prefer.
Blue Plums Vibrant Blue is the variety and tasty is what we call them. Enjoy these wonderful sweet plums as snacks, in baking, they can be pickled, grilled or poached. You will have lots so get creative.
Heritage Field Tomatoes Field Tomatoes are excellent for preserving, sauces, soups and making paste or pizza sauce. Grown using biodynamic farming principles and sun ripened, you can really taste the difference. Never store your tomatoes in the fridge, keep at room temperature away from sunlight.
Round Red Radishes Bunching type, this German variety grows small crunchy bulbs. They are mildly sweet with a spicy finish. Great addition to any salad, or just munch them raw with salt.
Sweet Italian Frying Pepper Long sweet peppers with a thin flesh and few seeds, perfect for slicing and frying to bring out a delicate smoky flavour. This heirloom variety was first brought over from southern Italy. Easy to prepare, simply fry the peppers in a hot pan and season with salt. Finish with a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese.
Eggplant They are the ultimate versatile fruit. A favourite for cooking vegetarian and Keto-friendly meals, eggplants have a rich, meaty flavour. From classic recipes like eggplant parm to new takes on veggie lasagna, your taste buds are covered. Baba ganoush anyone?
Thai Basil Native to Southeast Asia, its a bit sweeter than traditional basil with a more pronounced floral note and a slight licorice-y bite. Use in your sweet Italian frying peppers or add it to your home made tomato soup (see above).
