What can be better and more relaxing than a yoga class? How about a yoga class outside on our farm. We are so excited to be partnering with Nadia Esposito who runs a local yoga studio and will be moving her class to Rumar Farm next week. Their evening will start with a short walk through our bush (we call it our enchanted forest) to the back of the peach orchard. By the old forest trees they will run through their yoga moves until dusk. Namaste.
Here is what you can expect this week:
Zucchini This variety of summer squash is picked young so they are tender with a thin skin. If you have ever googled zucchini recipes you will find literally hundreds of ways you can cook them. We just love them because of how they can be a side dish almost all summer and we never get bored of them.
Pear and Peach Mix Here you can have a supply of fresh fruit for the week, whether you chop them up in a salad or just have it on the counter to enjoy as a snack. When left out pears and peaches continue to ripen and reaches thier sweetness from the inside out. Once fully ripe, they can be refrigerated. I like my fruit crunchy and prefer to eat them while they are still hard. Each to their own.
Heirloom Tomatoes So what makes an heirloom tomato an heirloom? Its a term used interchangeably with heritage, refers to varieties of tomatoes whose seeds have been passed down for generations. They have not been modified as hybrid varieties are. You can’t beat their aroma, flavour and freshness. Once you try them, no other tomato will do.
Cucumbers Fresh and crunchy, these are the pickling variety. That doesn’t mean you have to break out the vinegar and sterilize jars….they are great in sandwiches, salads or just as a healthy snack.
Mixed Mustard Green Salad Base These greens have a distinctive peppery taste which add a piquant accent to salads. So use your tomatoes, cucumbers or anything else you want to throw in for a wonderful salad. You can also saute them by seasoning with salt and pepper and tossing them until they wilt. Low fat food with loads of antioxidants.
Jalapeno Hot Peppers Considered milder side of the hot pepper family. Chop them up and add them to soups and stews to give it a bit of zest. We like to add them to our sliced eggs on toast on Sunday mornings. You can also roast Jalapenos which gives them a rich slightly smokey/earthy flavour. They are packed with vitamin C.
Fresh Sweet Basil Fragrant basil that tastes great in many dishes including the beloved homemade pesto. If you don’t want to use it right away, you can always freeze it. Another storage method is drying basil. Pinch off the leaves and flowers at the stem and place them in a well-ventilated and shady area. Nothing goes better with tomatoes (see above).
