Each year Rumar Farm attends the Guelph Organic Conference and this year was one of the best yet. Here we have a chance to learn about new organic and biodynamic farming techniques and discover best practices from other farmers from all over Canada. With plans for a new apple orchard the half day session on Essentials of Organic Orchard Management facilitated by our friend Pat Johnson was simply fantastic. Pat is an active member of the Society of Biodynamics and we respect his knowledge and experience in this field.
We select our Saturday and Sunday workshops carefully to target areas that are interesting and will help us learn new applications and approaches. With our 2020 production plan we know what we want to do and compare it to information provided at the conference. To maximize our learning Marc and I sometimes split up and attend separate sessions that are running at the same time. One of the sessions was called Selling Orchard and Field Crops to Chefs, it has given us some new ideas of things to grow that they will really like. Look out Hill Fire, Pearl Morissette and Dispatch, 2020 will have some real treats for you!
We also enjoy visiting the large trade show with over 140 vendors where you can find everything and anything organic related. We purchased a great book called A Biodynamic Manuel, sourced information on buying chicken supplies and had a great visit with the folks from EcoCert and Demeter who also had a booth there.
It was an exhausting weekend but well worth the time. At Rumar Farm we believe in lifelong learning and look for ways to always deliver on our mission to grow the best, most nutritious fruits and vegetables in a sustainable way.
